Google chrome OS was announced back in July and today Google announces that the project is open-source now. Its free and its available. You have access to Google chrome’s code base, initial design and some user interface experiments.
Three most important things that come as part of the announcement are:
- Every application on Chrome OS will be a web application. Nothing gets installed and everything stays online. That makes it more secure, easy, accessible and reliable.
- Its super secure and self healing. It will be real hard to infect and harm this OS and every time the OS will boot, it’ll check for integrity and will self heal if needed.
- Last but not least, get ready for the super speeds. From pressing the power button to surfing the Internet, it’ll take a few seconds. Google is optimizing it to its max.
Its already much more than something to get excited about but it’ll take some time. The OS will be available for the users around November 2010 or so. Anything that comes out before it definitely fake 🙂
Last but not least, you must watch following videos about the Chrome OS
And by any chance if you want to build on top of the code, chromium.org is the place to start.
